And what of the beauteous stones of this Earth?
What of the most beautiful jewel that can be found?
Where is it found, and wherefore, and why is it beautiful?

Did you think the most beautiful jewel in the world a diamond?
Did you think it something that glittered?
That it was a finery? To lay clasped at a lady’s neck,
Or to be rooted upon the crown of a king?
Did you think the most beautiful jewel something lavish and dear?
Or something that cost many a man his pocket?
Did you think the divine stone something precious, scarce, scattered?
Did you think it something dug up from the ground,
With many a gorgeous color inside?

And who or what did you think put those colors there?
Did you think it the secret action of a million uncounted years?
Did you think the fierce embrace of our Earth put those colors there?
Or the fierce fires of our Earth put those colors there?

Come now,
The most beautiful jewel in the world isn’t precious,
It is common as the dirt.
Nor is it expensive, nor far away when sought,
Nor in seeking demand vigor, nor energy, nor effort.
The most beautiful jewel in the world is the eye,
Your eye, whoever you are,
The eye that reads me, and the eye with which I write.

And the beautiful stones are only beautiful because of your eyes,
And the beautiful color in them is only in them because of your eyes,
And all beautiful things of this world would not be found anywhere,
If they were not found first in your eyes.

And do you wonder what is the source of all light?
Do you wonder what is the source of all colour?
All shape? All contour? All figures and backgrounds?

I’ll tell you,
It is not the sun, nor the world that give these things the Identity,
It is nearer, more hidden, more secret, than they.
