Working hard from home or hardly working at home?

Most of us, over the last year and a half have either :

Which category you fall into will determine and can provide a likelihood estimation of how life has been for you over this phase. While most were exuberant at the announcement of work from home for their profession, there were some who had intrinsically denied the new normal from the bottom of their soul and would rebel at the slightest of opportunities of opening up.

So far, working from home has proved itself to be a double edged sword for the professions that allow for it. In the short term perspective, it was a welcome change that was much needed and appreciated by most. But in the long run it seems that its not as much favorable to human nature as one might think. The fact that one gets more time to spend with his/her family and oneself is true but that can only be there for so long, after which the burnout of having long hours in front of a screen, multitasking between house and office work, and not having a physical place to meet and hangout does extract its toll over a period of time.

“You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain” — you must have heard this line a lot if you are even remotely interested in films, or into social media (which, at times, derives its content from films). Can’t this same principle be applied to this topic as well ( I must admit it applies to a lot of other things as well, but here we are, talking about work from home) ? What started off as a break from the ordinary has turned into the new ordinary.

If we think about it, it does not matter which category you fall into as long as you have an option to work from home. There are professions out there whose modus operandi does not allow one to work from home. What about them?

The first three words of this post are “most of us” for a reason, because if you are reading this, chances are you do fall into one of the aforementioned categories. But a larger demographic who would not be reading this are the ones who are truly bearing the brunt of the negatives of work from home.

Regardless of what each of our situation has been over the pandemic, we are destined to be better versions of ourselves once this phase is over. Even a mere survival of these tough times would make one eligible for a stronger will and the ability to challenge unforgiving times with a smile. As for work from home, it would transform into a more widely accepted mode of working, should one choose to divulge in it.

Nothing that we can call good always remains “good”, and not every bad situation has only “bad” in it.
