Remembering

Poem — writing prompt #9 — memories

Memories, fragments of a party,
a place, a time

When my children grew, it was
special to be home with them
no other memories like it
to nurture, to feed them, to love them
watching as infancy grew to school
age
what delightful memories remain,
many in pictures, but mostly in my
head and heart

There’s the memory of when our
dog jumped into the pool to save
screaming children just having
fun

Memories of people I’ve loved that
are gone that rush in like slips of
paper making me take note
the hurt of missing them turns
into joy as I remember

Mother taking me on bus trips
and to the movies where the love
of them took hold
helping me feel better when I was
sick
warming my belly with
food cooked with love
making me feel safe and warm

Remembering, like tiny particles
that float to the top and sometimes
brings the dark
learning to forgive and understand
why things were as they were or
happened as they did
feelings not to be denied but shown
the way out

And when there are no memories at
all left, then we’ll be gone, only to be
remembered and become cherished
memories ourselves.
