The power of writer to writer

You probably know that writers are often isolated. We spend long hours in front of our computers, typing away at something that is hidden from the world. Often, this feeling of isolation follows us home and sits on our shoulders while we’re trying to write. It doesn’t help that many writers are introverts — we like spending time alone, thinking and reading! But if you think a writer won’t discover their voice until they get away from people, think again!

In fact, the opposite is true: the best way for a writer to lift up their creative self is by helping others do the same. Aspiring writers will be inspired when they see how much impact their words can have on other people’s lives. Here are some ways to help other writers grow — and vice versa:

As a writer, you know how precious words are — but how do you know if they’re the right ones? While most people would rather praise than criticise, writers (and more specifically, aspiring writers) often crave the opposite. After all, we need honest feedback to improve our craft. And that’s when you, the reader, come in. As a reader, you can give constructive criticism to aspiring writers, helping them pinpoint weaknesses and strengthen their work: be honest, but also be kind. You’re not just helping a fellow writer, but also setting an example for everyone else who would like to write but is afraid to share their work.

You know how it feels when you finally find the words for a thought that’s been buzzing around in your head. You think, “Now, this is what I’m talking about!” Writers who have found their voices have that feeling often, and they need a little nudge to discover what it is. Ask aspiring writers to write about something they know well, and their tone and style will come out naturally. Narrate a childhood memory; write a short story based on a dream; jot down thoughts you have while driving, walking, or gardening; or put together a list of things that make you happy. All…
