Running kubectl from outside your kubernetes home lab cluster

Kubectl is a command line interface that communicates with the kubernetes API server to interact with the cluster. Everything on k8s is, practically, done by using this cli command. So, it is extremely important for you to master it! It is a good practice to have it running outside the cluster, so that you can exercise your skills without the need to running it from inside one of your control plane servers. Let’s begin!

When you install a kubernetes cluster using kubeadm you’re instructed to make some configurations in your order to run kubectl. In this tutorial, I explain how you can configure the kubectl to run from “outside” the kubernetes home lab cluster that you’ve created by following up one of my other tutorials:

Please, before moving forward, create your cluster using one of the methods above. As these methods of building, from the ground up, a k8s cluster does a lot of automatic stuff, I have also made some customizations in the process to make it easier go grab the files needed bye kubectl to connect to your home lab cluster.

To run this tutorial you will need to have pre-installed on your computer the latest version of the following components:

As you can see, the result is the same as the last step of the previous tutorials. The difference here is that you don't need to go inside one of the control plane servers to execute the kubectl.
