An Enhanced Christmas Story

It should be better the second time.

Much of the content for this story comes from an earlier Christmas story, I wrote, This is kind of like revision 2 of my first story. This story is updated with changes intended to make it an easier read and make it less confusing than the first Christmas story I wrote.

As Evan sat in the dingy, smoke-filled bar, his mind began to wander. It was mid-December, a couple of weeks away from Christmas, in the year 1978. The bar smelled of stale cigarettes. It had gotten dark early this mid-December day. There was barely any light inside or outside the bar.

Evan was depressed as he thought about his life. His children didn’t respect him, always talking back and never listening to what he said. They would never help out with household chores. His wife had let herself go and lost what initially attracted her to him. He regretted having his children and marrying his wife. He regretted everything and couldn’t think of anything to be thankful for. Most of all, he regretted the Christmas holiday and the traditions that went along with it.

He was displeased at the carolers proceeding down the street singing joyous Christmas carols and wishing everyone they crossed paths with a merry Christmas. He didn’t see the point. Furthermore, he thought it was ridiculous.

The bartender announced the last call, and Evan proceeded to put on his winter apparel and proceed toward the door.

It had been a miserable day, having a mixture of snow and sleet rain from above. As Evan exited the bar, a gust of cold wind hit him, causing a chill to run down his back.

As he stepped out the door, he slipped on the recently accumulated snow. He fell and hit his head, causing him to lose consciousness.

When Evan awoke, he found that he was overdressed. It was sunny. It didn’t seem like mid-December. Suddenly, instead of brisk cold, he was sweating from the sun’s warmth. There was a spirit dressed kike the grim reaper standing next to Evan as he woke.
