#1. Long-lasting love requires a big heart and a short memory

None of us are born knowing exactly how to love.

We learn what it means to love from our parents, and we go on to reproduce those lessons from childhood with our romantic partners in adult life.

Along the way, we collect references on what romance should look like by watching other adults around us, and by consuming cultural products like books and movies.

But the lessons we learn aren’t always accurate — or healthy.

It can take a lot of trying to get to a perspective of love and romance that’s functional and healthy.

To save you some time, here are four hard truths to swallow about love and relationships:

Corinthians 1–13 is arguably the most famous passage about love in the Bible. The verse is so beautiful it is often featured in non-religious weddings as well as religious ones.

The passage contains a good number of truths regarding love, but the most important is probably: “[love] is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”

Not being able to let things go can kill a relationship. When you can resurrect mistakes your partner committed years ago to make a point during an argument, you’re poisoning your relationship.

Keeping no record of wrongs doesn’t mean pretending not to care about issues or mistakes, it doesn’t mean avoiding conflict and accepting anything and everything your partner does to not rock the boat.

What it means is to talk it over, resolve your differences, forgive your partner, and put the issue to rest, once and for all.

Don’t hold on to small slights and stupid disagreements, it makes your heart bitter and ugly.
