SingHealth data breach..

A recent cyber attack on SingHealth: singapore’s leading healthcare center, shook whole singapore government and drew their attention to the growing threat of cyber crimes. In this attack Personal details of almost

1.5 million people were stolen including prime minister.

This incident came to light when some of the SingHealth’s Integrated health information systems (IHIS)detected some unusual activity in one of its IT databases. On further investigation it was found that the servers were hacked on 27th of july 2018 and the breach was detected on 4th of july 2018..

This was the biggest data breach in the history of singapore, being the largest health group in singapore, it has a responsibility to protect the data of its patients but this breach questioned the ability of group to manage the data of their patients especially of VIPs like the prime minister. So now the patients count is also degrading causing them capital losses.

Also it caused capital losses as it had to look forward to enhancing their security systems and regular database check, so that this incident never ever happens again.

. As SingHealth in one of the leading healthcare providers in singapore, It had a state of the art security systems that were almost impossible to crack but every system has a weak point and that is humans, An expert report from The cyber security agency (CSA) says that one of the workstations of SingHealth were infected by malware which allowed the hackers to access the database of SingHealth. But till now it has not been yet discovered how the malware got into the computers but experts say that this can be probably due to any inattentive staff member.

According to experts, The intention of the hackers was not to interrupt the working of the SingHealth group as they only monitored the data of patients. They probably just wanted to utilise the data for their personal profits. But experts predict that stealing data on a large scale was just a camouflage, the actual target was the prime minister,s data.

As per the expert report the breach became possible due to the malware that infected the front end workstation of SingHealth and probably it was due to inattentiveness of the employees that work in the work stations.

A solution to this is to train the employees against such spams, so that they can identify such spams and block them right away and the further consequences can be prevented. Products like ThreatCop which is basically a product provided by an IT solution company named Kratikal, It trains the employees of the company about how to identify and block such spams and also keeps them up to date with latest hacking techniques. It examines the employee behaviour to simulate security attacks and reduce the cyber risk from employee point of view
