How to Get There

Traveling gives a person a sense of freedom and relaxation, unless you’re my father who see’s it as wasting money. Fortunately I take after my mother. We have traveled across the country by all different types of transportation. From the open road to the rails to flight, I’ve done it all. Each time is different with such a variety of experiences.

How do I choose which way to get to my destination? Four things: Distance, Company, Time, and Cost. How I travel is based on how far I will travel, who I am traveling with, how long it will take to get there, and how much money I could save. Yes, cost is a factor. I am still my father’s daughter. All of these factors lead to how I will get to my destination.

The open road is one option, whether by car or bus. If you take a car, the time depends on you, when you want to leave. I recommend this type of travel if you want to drive around when you get to your destination. Then you can come and go as you please. The company that I travel with is either by self or up to 4 people depending on the size of the vehicle. 15 passenger vans seem fun but only for short distances up to 12 hours away. Otherwise the smell can become excruciating. If you are wondering about the cost, it does add up when you include check-up fee, gas, and, perhaps, rental fee. When gas was at a high of $4, I would’ve chosen another route, but now that is at a lower $2.50, the cost is much better. The perks of the open road is you get to see all different types of life. Plus you can stop and take detours whenever you’d like.

On a bus, you meet a variety of people, like most public travel. You can see the differences between areas of living easier and it’s fun to just look out the window and not worry about driving. The cost is usually cheap but if a bus breaks down, it could delay you hours without an alternate option. I was once stuck 1 hour from my destination in the middle of nowhere and had to wait 4 hours until another bus came. In a car, things are dealt with quicker. I recommend shorter routes on buses, up to 10 hours, otherwise the bus starts to smell and there are no windows to open.

Another way to go is the rails. My first train experience was okay. Though it was with my mother and the trip was 24 hours long. We decided to not purchase a sleeping car to cut costs. It was an okay trip on the way to our destination. The staff was considerate, the passengers were mostly on the train for just a few stops, and the viewing car through the mountains was amazing. The cost of the train was about as much as a flight at the time and, like I said before, we decided not to get a sleeping cart. Though a perk is that you can bring on more luggage than any other public travel and you arrive at your destination faster than car. A down side is that if anything happens, such as weather or a crime, the train will be delayed for an uncertain amount of time. This type of travel is great either alone or with a group of people. If you’re looking for a way to travel and get work done, I recommend this route.

The final way of travel is flight. This is my personal favorite as it is quick, fun, and the person watching in the airport is delightful. The cost can be low. The amount of people is unlimited and great for a large group of people. The flights are usually reliable and the airport attendants are often kind enough to help a person out who is polite. Plus this is the best way to travel overseas.

These are options of ways to travel. Take my advice; never travel the same way twice. Take different routes and experience the world in all its beauty.
