Humans And Mice In Empathic Relationship

Why can’t we really be liberated, and is a person just a person?

Being able to associate oneself with someone else’s special situation and feel someone else’s pain or sadness is about empathy. Actually empathy; It plays an important role in responding appropriately to another person and analyzing perceptions correctly. However, it is a fact that we do not really care whether empathy that has developed since our childhood has a real place in our social life.

Facial expressions can develop a counter-reflex in recognizing visible effects. It has been found that children older than 5 years react to changes in different human faces. Survival is an instinctive attitude, and this age group begins to be influenced by people’s facial expressions to grasp it well. In fact, signs of empathy can be seen even in babies. For example; Experiments confirm that newborn babies are more likely to cry when they are anxious or hear audio recordings of other crying babies. (Zahn-Wexler et al.1992)

When children see someone else injured, their brains somehow react. But there is more to human empathy than sharing the pain of another living being. These include winning a sense of self-knowledge, the ability to distinguish one’s emotions from others, taking another person’s perspective, and also regulating one’s own emotional response while witnessing another person’s perspective.

There are other possible factors for showing empathy. The likelihood of empathy increases when the similarities that the victim is in familiar circumstances and between the person or group who are perceived as victims emerge. In this case, a rapidly growing intersection set imposes responsibilities on the group to which one belongs.

Often such an empathic interest can go deep and shallow towards a group or person with moral and political convictions. The fact that empathy is designed according to class distinction only in these groups brings along great blindness. So who or who really deserves our empathic attention? Or is the view that this is a right also polemic?

An experiment is conducted by Peggy Mason and his team at the University of Chicago to better understand humans on mice. They encapsulate one of the two mice in a transparent cell that can be opened from the outside and release the other around the cell. And they follow the behavior of the free mouse.

Over time, they observe that anxiety and stress increase in the free mouse that sees the mouse trapped in the transparent cell. Moreover, the free mouse discovers, after several experiences, that the door has opened without any “conditioning” and begins to rescue the mouse indoors.

The researchers then confine a mouse to the first cage and place the mice’s favorite chocolate chips in the second cage to address the beneficial aspect of the relationship between the mice. This time, it is seen that the mouse that survived outside the cell preferred to rescue the mouse in the cell first, instead of going to the cage with their favorite chocolate.

It is noteworthy that the same result appears over and over again in four years.

Mice and humans … creatures that try the same drugs because they show similar symptoms. Freedom of thought is the most important feature that distinguishes humans from mice, but as a creature that can think of its own species under stress, do mice have a greater capacity than humans?

People can be enriched by the diversity of ideas. And real solidarity can only be achieved by forming assemblies open to cooperation. We don’t need big changes for peace to prevail all over the world. Basically, like empathy, humans have a treasured treasure since their very existence. Revealing this and establishing a civilization where thought is free will be the most important legacy to be left in the future.
