Significance of Donation and giving in Hinduism

It is an important duty of every Hindu to give donations (Dana) to temples, trusts, and orphanages. Hindus believe in Dharma towards the family, society and all living things. The wealthy person cannot keep all the wealth for himself but he has to share it for the welfare of the extended family and others. It is the responsibility of the wealthy person to give a share of his wealth to the needy. Giving can be of any form but it should help the families to survive. In certain cases, an individual has to compromise his own goals for the sake of this family and others. Giving begins at home and when you give a donation to the trust or for Shivalinga Prathista, it will bring a lot of welfare to the family.

Bhagavadi-gita is the holy book of Hindu community and it talks about three types of giving.

A gift, item or object is given to others without expecting any appreciation. This giving can be beneficial for the giver and the recipient.

Secondly, it talks about giving a gift or object with some expectations from the recipient. This can be very harmful to both the giver and the recipient.

Thirdly, a gift given to the recipient without respecting their feelings can be harmful to the recipient and the giver. Giving gifts or donation at the wrong time is not advisable as It can cause embarrassment.

Are you aware of a trust or society establishing temples? Too much of wealth do not bring happiness and peace. Historical references speak about peace and happiness of people who are detached from wealth. Materials do not give happiness and you can feel the happiness only when you donate and give others.

One of the common forms of donation is anna dana (Sharing food with others). It is a religious duty of every Hindu to offer food to an unexpected guest at home. It is a tradition to keep a handful of food at night to serve unexpected guests.

Do not hesitate to share your wealth with those who are in need. Help others and feel satisfied. Look for those who are in need and provide them with what they need. Satisfy the needs of others and you will feel happy.
